WHY is it important? WithoutEffective Career Development… Most career decision-making is unintentional and uninformed. 65% of working adults do not believe they are in the right job (NCDA/Gallup, 1999)
The“Next” GenerationBorn Between 1980 and 1999 • Millennials • Screenagers • Echo-Boomers • Wired Generation • Dot-com Generation • Entitled Generation 75 million
Getting to Know Them…………. • Raised on Technology • Open-minded about globalization • Raised to “play” • Instant gratification/ coddled • Improved Literacy • Work well on teams
More …………………. • Work to live, not live to work • Employee for life is a “Myth” • Grew up with both parents working • 50% grew up with single parents
Attitudes or qualities they bring to the workplace…………. • Boredom • Low perception of boundaries • Willingness to sacrifice benefits for better work/life balance • Unwillingness to think of early job as careers • Expect employers to be socially responsible • Acceptance of authority and willingness to follow rules
Why should we care? • Boomers replacement in the workforce • Change jobs 19 times • High turnover of knowledge workers • We have a lot to learn from the “Millennials” • Influence the workplace for the next 50 years 80 million
What can we all do for our students? • Encourage experiences • Be a support system • Affirm who they are • Share information
Career Development Is Everyone’s Responsibility…….. Let’s infuse “Career Development” throughout the curriculum to be taught by not only counselors but teachers, parents, and the student’s too!
