Scorekeeper’s Job • Home Team is responsible for keeping score • To keep a record of the game … as called by the Umpire • You are the Accountant not the IRS • Always have sharp pencils and eraser for the job - makes it far easier. Carrying a box in the car might not be a bad idea. • If you have questions, ask (another scorekeeper, manager).

Pre-Game Preparation • Arrive 15 minutes ahead of game time • If home team, get score book from shed and electronic scoreboard keypad. • Verify scoreboard works • If visitor use team book • Get line-up from each manager • Enter visitor and home line-ups on opposing pages • Visitors on left and home team on right • Include player name and jersey number

More Pre-game Prep • Enter date and starting time • Fill in starting pitchers at bottom • Keep track of innings pitched under “IP” • Partial innings count as an inning • Players arriving after the start of the game are added at the bottom of the line-up • If official book is not in shed use a sheet from team book and tear out at the end

  6. Position Numbers 8 • Each playing position has a number (position 10 is only used for AA level and lower divisions) 10 7 9 4 6 5 1 3 Numbering is in a semi-logical sequence beginning with the pitcher (if you think of the shortstop as a “short fielder”) 2

  7. Scoring the count at Bat • You need to mark all Balls and Strikes pitched per batter. • Ask the umpire to clarify the call if necessary, but only when play has been stopped. He may ask you for the same! • Don’t get behind in the count. • Take your breaks when there is a break in the play.

  9. Scoring a Batter on Base • Fielder’s choice is not a hit. • How to score and error, which is not a hit. • Getting on base via an error or fielders choice is not a hit.

  10. Scoring a runner and runs • After marking the appropriate method of getting on base marked clearly - then complete the triangle for the based completed bases run. • You should also mark errors and total errors per inning which is a key metric in baseball.

Scoring a Batter Out • Ways a batter makes an out: K KS F9 5-3 Strikeout (looking) Strikeout (swinging) Fly out (right field) Force or Tag (3rd to 1st) An Unassisted Put Out is when a fielder can make an out on a ground ball without throwing it to another defensive player (Example: A ground ball is hit to the 1st baseman, he field’s it and steps on 1st base before the runner arrives = U3) U3 FO5 Unassisted Put Out Foul out (3rd baseman)

  13. Fielding Records: Pitching • You must mark the following: • Pitchers Name • Innings pitched • one pitch in an inning counts. • # of total pitches, counting all balls thrown when a batter is at the plate. • It is best to tally at the end of every inning.
