  1. Jesus Christ Dead or Alive? Part 2

  2. Jesus’ Tomb Was Empty! • What happened to the body of Jesus? • Fact: There was not eyewitness to the event of the resurrection. • This still doesn’t hurt the case for the resurrection. • Did Jesus die on the cross? • Did anyone see him after His death?

  3. Earliest Claims • 1 Corinthians (55-57 AD) • 9:1 – “Am I not an Apostle? Have I not seen the Lord?” • 15:8 – “Last of all He appeared to me.”

  4. Earliest Claims • 1 Corinthians 15:4-8 • Significance: • Specific names mentioned • Early enough to be verified by eyewitnesses • Peter & James mentioned (Gal. 1:18-19) • 500 not mentioned anywhere else • “most of whom remain until now”

  5. The Gospels and Acts • Mary Magdalene (John 20:10-18) • The other women (Matt. 28:8-10) • Cleopas and another disciple on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-32) • Eleven disciples and others (Luke 24:33-49) • 10 apostles without Thomas (John 20:19-23) • Thomas and other apostles (John 20:26-30) • 7 apostles (John 21:1-14) • The disciples (Matt. 28:16-20) • The apostles, before Jesus ascension (Acts 1)

  6. The Gospels and Acts • Acts is saturated with the resurrection claim. • Especially Peter: • Acts 2:32 – “This Jesus God raised up again, to which we are all witnesses.” • Acts 3:15 – “but put to death the Prince of life, the one who God raised from the dead, a fact to which we are witnesses.” • Acts 10:40-41

  7. Circumstantial Evidence • Exhibit 1: The Apostles Died for Their Beliefs • From discouraged, depressed and afraid • To excited, passionate, confident • Left their families and homes • Devoted their lives to preaching a controversial message • With no worldly payoff • Willing to die for their belief in Jesus

  8. Circumstantial Evidence • Exhibit 2: The Conversion of Skeptics • James, Jesus’ brother • Josephus records that James, a leader in the Jerusalem church, was stoned to death because of faith in his brother. • Saul of Tarsus • Pharisee & Persecutor of Christians • Doesn’t just ease off of believers • Joins them & claims to have seen the risen Christ

  9. John 20:29 “Jesus said to him, ‘Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.’”
