  3. Why is book selection important? Your child will become bored with reading if a book is too easy. There isn’t enough substance in the book to keep your child’s interest. Your child is not being an active reader. Applying reading skills and strategies is not required so they are not practiced and developed.

  4. Why is book selection important? Your child will become frustrated with reading if a book is too hard. He/she is too overloaded with trying to decode words and is not able to make sense of the text. The book is too challenging for your child to comprehend. If your child is not comprehending, your child is not reading!

Selecting “just-right” books is vital if you want to encourage your child to be engaged in reading, enhance their reading skills and strategies, and develop a love for reading.

  6. What is a “just-right” book? • Think about the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Goldilocks loved the chair, the porridge, and the bed that were “just-right”. • Students love reading books that are “just-right”.They aren’t too easy, but they aren’t too hard either. 7. The Goldilocks Rule: A Strategy for Finding a “Just-Right” Book Follow these three instructions for using the Goldilocks Rule: Turn to a page in the book. Read the page. Hold up a finger for every word you don’t know. Images: http://www.babytidings.com/category/teddy-bear-baby-clipart.html

  8. Is this book a “just-right” book? Using the Goldilocks Rule, you can determine if the book is going to be too easy, too hard, or just-right! Check out the following link for additional clues for determining if a book is “just-right”: http://www.ourclassweb.com/center_activities/readers_workshop/rw_poster_goldilocks_rules.pdf

  9. Using Questions to Guide Book Selection: When helping your child choose a book, have your child ask him/herself these questions: What subjects do I like to read about? What types of books do I like? What authors do I like? For an example of using this strategy, watch this video: A Closer Look At Choosing A Book I Discovery Education

  10. Tips for Reading at Home with Your Child: Some reading strategies that we learn are: • Get your mouth ready by saying the first sound • Sounding the word out/Stretching the word • Looking at the picture clues • Skipping the word and thinking about what would make sense • Rereading Read, read, read! Read every day. Encourage your child to read aloud to a family member, pet, or even a stuffed animal.
