  1. 中山大学客座教授聘任仪式暨薛泉教授学术报告会中山大学客座教授聘任仪式暨薛泉教授学术报告会 2011年11月18日(周五)10:00~11:30 中山大学(东校区)信息学院A101会议室 报告题目:New Techniques on the Efficiency Improvement for Microwave Power Amplifiers 报告人:薛泉教授 主持人:龙云亮教授 New Techniques on the Efficiency Improvement for Microwave Power Amplifiers Professor Quan XUE (薛泉), IEEE Fellow Associate Vice President, City University of Hong Kong (香港城市大学协理副校长) Abstract: The efficiency improvement of microwave power amplifiers (PAs) has been attracting continuous interests because PAs consume most of the energy in transceivers for modern wireless communication. High efficiency usually means low power consumption, and extended battery operating endurance for mobile devices. Two new developed techniques will be introduced to improve the efficiency of power amplifiers. The first one is to design a class-F power amplifier using Compact Microstrip Resonating Cell (CMRC). The third harmonic open circuit condition and size reduction are achieved simultaneously. This scheme provides a straightforward and simple approach to design Harmonic Control Circuit (HCC). The second technique is on the new design consideration on the Doherty power amplifier to achieve balanced current distribution in carrier and peak amplifiers. The proposed structure is integrated into the gate biasing network of the peaking power amplifier (PA), and then the gate voltage can be adaptively adjusted with the input power. Due to the presence of this simple but effective circuit, the peaking PA can approach the ideal power transfer characteristic which results in better efficiency than the conventional design with constant biasing. Biography: Professor Quan Xue ((M’02–SM’04-F’11)) received the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in electronic engineering from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC), Chengdu, China, in 1988, 1990, and 1993, respectively. In 1993, he joined the UESTC, as a Lecturer. He became an Associate Professor in 1995 and a Professor in 1997. From October 1997 to October 1998, he was a Research Associate and then a Research Fellow with the Chinese University of Hong Kong. In 1999, he joined the City University of Hong Kong where he is currently a Professor, an Associate Vice President, and serves as the Director of Information and Communication Research Center, Deputy Director of State Key Laboratory (Hong Kong) of Millimeter-waves of China. Since May 2004, he has been the Principal Technological Specialist of the State Integrated Circuit (IC) Design Base, Chengdu, China. He has authored or co-authored over 200 internationally referred journal papers and over 80 international conference papers. He owns 4 Chinese patents and 5 USA patents. His current research interests include microwave passive components, active components, antenna, microwave monolithic integrated circuits (MMIC), RFID and radio frequency integrated circuits (RFIC) etc. Professor Xue is now the associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques, the associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, and the Editor of International Journal of Antennas and Propagation. He is an elected member of IEEE MTT-S AdCom ,the Chair of IEEE Hong Kong Section AP/MTT Chapter. He was elected as an IEEE Fellow (2011) for contributions in microwave transmission line structures and integrated circuits.
