  2. Lesson One: Rights & Responsibilities Agree? Disagree? • I am looking forward to (or I enjoyed) my Bar/Bat Mitzvah. • The most important thing about my Bar/Bat Mitzvah is the party and presents. • I expect to feel differently about myself after my Bar/Bat Mitzvah. • I expect to “grow up” as I prepare and learn for my Bar/Bat Mitzvah. • I expect to feel differently about my community after my Bar/Bat Mitzvah. • I will contribute more to society after my Bar/Bat Mitzvah. • I will contribute more to synagogue life after my Bar/Bat Mitzvah. • Bar/Bat Mitzvah would be a more meaningful symbol of growing up if it took place a bit later in life. • I have nothing to give to my community – I will when I’m older. • I care about problems in my community and the world but feel I can’t do much to change anything because of my age.

Lesson Three: Going Global, Taking Action • We Are Learning To • Take inspiration from examples of young people’s activism in the developing world. • Identify what issues matter to you, choosing an issue to work on in your project. • Move towards an action plan to put your project into practice and make a difference in your community and the world.

  14. Lesson Three: Going Global, Taking Action Sikkum (Evaluation) Throughout the past few lessons we have thought about growing up and taking responsibility, seeing the importance of respecting each other’s rights and taking action to emeet each other’s needs. We have learned about Jewish ideas of responsibility and have seen examples of young people taking action in the developing world. Finally, we have chosen a project of our own and made some plans to move forwards and improve our community and world. This is your chance to practice responsibility and participation as you approach your Bar/Bat Mitzvah and think about becoming a more active part of your community and the wider world around us.
