  3. First, About You… • I have (or am scheduled for) a new DR installation. • I have a DR… …running on an existing server with no issues, thank you very much. …running OK on older hardware with some concerns. …that’s about to tip over and start smoking.

A Brief History 1989: Ashton-Tate/Microsoft SQL Server version 1.0 ships 1990: Microsoft SQL Server version 1.1; it runs on Windows 3.0 1992: SQL Server 4.2 released 1993: Windows NT 3.1 and SQL Server for Windows NT released (32-bit) 1994: Microsoft/Sybase partnership ends 1995: SQL Server 6.0 1996: SQL Server 6.5 1999: SQL Server 7.0 – major rewrite 2000: SQL Server 2000 From Inside SQL Server 2000, by Kalen Delaney

  5. Current SQL Server Versions SQL Server 2000: no longer supported by Microsoft. Still widely available and in use. SQL Server 2008: the latest and greatest. Recommended for new DR deployments.

  6. SQL Server and Data Repository • Why do I need SQL Server? • Data Repository requires a relational database to store data. Microsoft Windows Server and SQL Server are the only OS/DB platform used by MEDITECH DR. But… • SQL Server is also a reporting platform. • Additional tools and services may drive a decision to upgrade or add a new server.

  7. DR Customers • What version of SQL Server should I install or upgrade to? • It depends… • As a general rule, we recommend installing the most current version supported by MEDITECH. • But, there are other considerations: dollars, software license availability, IT staff support, hardware…

  9. What About Windows Server? • Windows Server 2000 supports SQL Server 2000, 2005 • Windows Server 2003 supports SQL Server 2000, 2005, 2008 • Windows Server 2008 supports SQL Server 2005, 2008

  11. SQL Server Features & Services • As a DR customer, the real benefit of your SQL Server is how you get information out of it, not how it goes in.

  12. Data Transformation Services (DTS) – from SQL 7.0 • Analysis Services (OLAP Services in SQL 7.0) • Reporting Services (SSRS) • Report authoring, development, presentation and delivery

  13. New client tools, including integrated administrative/development application (SQL Management Studio) • Integration Services (SSIS) replaces DTS • Report Builder 1.0 added to SSRS • Visual Studio 2005 IntelliSense

  14. Refinements to Management Studio • IntelliSense for SQL queries • Improved Report Builder 2.0 • SSRS Enhancements • Better data visualization with gauges and charts • Manageable via Windows PowerShell (Server 2008)

  15. SQL Server 2008 R2 (just released) adds more Business Intelligence enhancements, including: • PowerPivot for Excel on SharePoint 2010 • SharePoint 2010 Operations Dashboard • SSRS Report Builder 3.0

SQL Server Upgrades • The upgrade process to 2005 or 2008 uses the same tools and recommendations from Microsoft: • Review the SQL Books Online Upgrade Checklist, available on MSDN (msdn.microsoft.com) • Run the SQL Upgrade Advisor, which checks all installed components and services and identifies any potential issues

  18. SQL Server Upgrades • If you have SQL Server 2000: • You can upgrade to 2005 • You can upgrade to 2008 • Biggest Gotcha: DTS Packages • If you have SQL Server 2005: • You can upgrade to SQL 2008

A Little More About DTS Packages • During the upgrade, be sure to specify support for “Legacy Components” • Install Integration Services • For existing SQL 2000 DTS packages you can: • Leave them running as legacy components • By default, these cannot be edited or changed in SQL 2005/2008 • Migrate them to SQL 2005/2008 SSIS, which converts them to native Integration Services packages • Test…test…test!
