CCSSE Overview • Emphasis on student engagement and student learning (e.g., Astin, Tinto, Pace) • Adapted from the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) • Funding from Lumina Foundation for Education and Pew Charitable Trusts • Administered by Community College Leadership Program at UTA • Pilot test in 2001; field test in 2002

  4. 2003 CCSSE: National & Regional Surveys • National • 93 community colleges • 65,300 usable surveys • Northwest Consortium • Six WA community colleges & one in BC • 3,480 usable surveys • SBCTC paid UTA for the inclusion/analysis of 19 additional questions, items agreed to by all six consortium colleges and SBCTC

  5. 2003 CCSSE: SVC Surveys • Sample selected from spring class info sent to UTA (dept, enrolled, campus, days/time) • ABE and ESL courses not included • Survey administration arranged with faculty during May 2003 • Script read to students; approximately 50 minutes allowed for survey completion • Comparability between CCSSE and CCSEQ on many items

  7. 2003 CCSSE: SVC Surveys • Surveyed 850 students in 60 classes at MV and WI campuses, plus small sample from So Whidbey Ctr & San Juan Ctr • Piloted a distance education version, but poor response rate; not included in analysis • 765 useable surveys included in the analysis, from students in on-ground courses

General Characteristics • Most of the students surveyed were: • Attending full-time (81%) • Taking on-ground courses primarily (96%) • Taking courses during the day (87%) • Slightly over half were 22 years of age or younger • Three-quarters started their college career at SVC • Most (72%) intended to re-enroll at the college in Summer or Fall 2003

Activities: Most Frequent* • Discussed ideas from your readings or classes with others outside of class (students, family members, co-workers, etc.) – 23.5% • Worked with other students on projects during class – 22.7% • Had serious conversations with students who differ from you in terms of their religious beliefs, political opinions, or personal values – 20.5% * 20% or more reported doing this “Very Often”
