D • Problems with Florida natives and Georgia border • Andrew Jackson invaded: told Spain to govern properly or get out • Fearful of war, Spain sold it to us for $5 million • U.S promised to respect Spain’s claim to Texas

C B A • Republic of • (Independent Country) E D Why? • region was well suited for growing cotton. • Texas independent from Mexico in 1836 • Northerners feared it would become a slave state • Fears finally overcome in 1844 Presidential election; Polk was a strong believer in manifest destiny and annexed (add a territory to a country) Texas

Britain, Russia, Spain, & US) • fertile soil and great forests: Oregon fever • President Polk demanded “54° 40’ or fight!”: wanted the entire area • Britain compromised 49° & US accepted

G • Mexico (present day California and New Mexico) E D Why? • Polk offers to buy G from Mexico & they refuse • Texas and Mexico can’t agree on a border: War! • US wins • In Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, US offers $15 million for G: Mexican Cession (is something that is given up)
