  2. Example #1 James got a flyer advertising a sale at the music store. Based on the ad, how much would 5 CDs cost? Special – Used CDs Any 2 for $9.98 (while supplies last) Five CDs would cost $ 24.95.

  3. Example #2 A 6-foot tall sign casts an 8-foot shadow. At the same time, a nearby flagpole casts a 20-foot shadow. How tall is the flagpole? flagpole sign x 6 ft 8ft 20 ft The flagpole is 15 feet tall.

  4. Example #3 On a map, 1 cm = 4 km. The distance between the zoo and the airport measures 8.2 cm. What is the actual distance between the zoo and the airport? The actual distance between the zoo and the airport is 32.8 kilometers.

  5. Example #4 Rick bought a pair of shoes priced at $30. The sales tax was 8% of the price. What was the amount of the sales tax? Don’t forget the percent proportion! The sales tax was $2.40. The total cost of the shoes would be the price plus the tax. $30 + $2.40 = $32.40

  6. Example #5 Maria purchased a new purse on-line for $75. She paid $9.75 for shipping and handling. What percent of the purchase price was the shipping and handling charge? The shipping and handling charge was 13% of the purchase price.

  7. Example #6 • Brian ate 3 pretzels. This is 12.5 % of the total number of pretzels in the bag. How many pretzels were in the bag before Brian ate any of them? There were 24 pretzels in the bag before Brian ate any of them.

  8. Example 7 • Wally sells a TV for $2,195 and a computer for $995. He makes 9.5% commission. How much money will he receive altogether for these two sales? Wally earned a commission of $303.05.

  9. Example 8 • Jeremy is building a model of a ship with a scale of 1 inch = 20 feet. If the length of the actual ship is 180 feet, how long will the model be? The model will be 9 inches long.
