  1. Bioinformatics Update Nicky Wolstenholme Regional Training Officer

  2. History • ‘variants of unknown significance’ • CMGS Best Practice guidelines published 2007 • NGRL Bioinformatics Courses Launched • Alamut software • Challenge of Next Generation sequencing • Volume of data • Analysis pipelines • Data stability and security • Microarrays

  3. Competences • Training programmes need learning outcomes based on competences • Group set up to develop competences • Molecular Geneticists • Cytogeneticists • NGRL • Draft competences have been circulated widely and some revisions made

  4. Bioinformatics and MSC • New group established • Comprises • Head of School of Genetics • NGRL & NOWGEN • Regional Trainer • University of Manchester • (bioinformatics distance learning) • DoH • Professional advisers from joint CMGS/ACC Bioinformatics group

  5. Bioinformatics Group • Objectives • Develop strategy for DoH • Bioinformatics in the future of the NHS • Recognition of ‘Clinical Bioinformatics’ • Re-skill existing staff in diagnostic laboratories • Bioinformatics training for MSC: STP and PTP • Outline a new career path for specialist diagnostic bioinformaticians

  6. Re-skill existing staff • Develop existing competences to provide learning outcomes • Create distance learning modules and assessment tools • Suggested line manager or HOD to sign off competences. • Assess feedback from laboratories to improve existing courses

  7. MSC - STP • Extend scope of existing 2 day courses • foundation module • operating systems • command-line operation • data governance • data sharing • 2nd module • Tools and resources • Browsers • Assessment tools + reflective learning • UoM experience sought

  8. MSC - PTP • More focus on foundation module

  9. Specialist Diagnostic Bioinformaticians • The Dutch experience • Specialist Clinical Bioinformaticians employed in the University Hospitals & PhDs offered. • UoM keen to develop new MSc • Existing MSc but additional clinical modules • Support of MSC needed

  10. The Future • A virtual institute of diagnostic bioinformatics?? • ??Leeds looking at Breast cancer as a model for using Clonal Sequencing and bioinformatics
