Deep Ocean Currents Global Conveyer Belt Thermohaline
What is the Global Conveyer Belt? • It is a current or collection of currents that move below the surface of the water. • Driven by the density of water (remember water that is cold and has a high salinity is more dense.) • This causes the waters of the oceans to spread out and move among the different oceans due to the changes in the mass of waters density (temperature and salinity). • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuOX23yXhZ8
Let’s Journey with a Water Mass • The current begins in the waters near the Northern Atlantic regions. Here the ocean water sinks to the bottom of the ocean due to its density. • As a deep surface current it moves back toward the Atlantic Ocean and eventually back to the Northern Atlantic region (to sink again)
Upwelling • Occurs due to changes in the density of water (salinity or temperature) • Can occur due to the topography of the ocean floor. For example the cold current running into the continental plate.
Benefits to Upwelling • Brings nutrients up from the ocean floor. • Bring Cold water up toward the surface • Causes deep water to move in the ocean. • Allows for gases to be dissolved in the water.
Facts to Keep In Mind • This thermohaline circulation (another name) moves more slowly than surface currents • It can take 1,000 years for the water to complete one full circuit • The coldest, saltiest, densest water is found off the coast of Antarctica
