Info • The Roman fort at Housesteads is situated on the eastern end of a mile long crag of whinstone stretching between the Knag Burn in the east and the Bradley Burn to the west.
Vicus • The vicus would have housed the family, of the soldiers and also would have contained areas for other pursuits. • According to Hill and Ireland these areas for other pursuits where “Dubious” • According to Mr Pegler this was a “murder house” • The most common buildings were strip houses. • At some of these strip houses inns which would have provided overnight accommodation, have been found.
Vicus cont. • When the fort was first built these inns were kept at a distance. • By the end of the 2nd century the civil settlement was clustered around the fort • There were a number of temples to the north and west of chapel hill. • These were Temple of Mars Thinscus and Mithraeum
Religion at Housesteads • A temple of Mithras is believed to be located in the vicus at housesteads, mainly for the use of the soldiers as “Mithraea” was strictly restricted to men
