LAST WEEK’S HIGHLIGHTS - February 11, 2010 Make a difference. Change the world one child and one community at a time. GUEST SPEAKERS INVOCATION Heavenly Father, Help us to realize that when we think we give more than we get, often we really get more than we give. May our faith in God cause us to do more than just care, but may we also share what we have with those in need. Our depth of giving should be unlimited. And now bless this food to our use and us to Your service. Amen Volunteers Needed! Muench UPCOMING EVENTS Our Annual Fletcher Scholar Breakfast will be held on March 12, 2010 at the Community Presbyterian Church in Atlantic Beach. Mar 27 - Apr 3 – Kiwanis Cruise to Eastern Caribbean Kathy Ingram, MSW, CFRE Director, Community Inituatives Nemours BrightStart Laura L. Bailet, PhD Executive Director, Nemours BrightStart “CHILD SAFETY” Nemours BrighStart creates programs to support early identification and treatment for young children at risk for dyslexia, a major child health issue that affects many American children. The work begins with pre-kindergarteners, when preventive action can help the most. Ph. 904-697-3172 www.Nemours.org WANTED Guest Speaker Coordinators Our club hopes to be identified with projects that contribute to child safety from any and all perspectives. Some examples: - "Every Child a Swimmer" where we would pay for scholarships for poor kids to get swimming lessons. - "Child Identification Kits" where we would arrange to have a current picture taken, measure height, and weight, and take a thumb print, and give all of it to the parents (perhaps twice a year for younger kids) so that if they go missing the parents have valuable information to give to the authorities. - The sheriff's office has a number of child safety programs, videos, and handouts. We could sponsor and/or facilitate these programs. - We could pass out home safety survey booklets, that help young parents to find potential accident problems in the home. - Subsidize child car seats for poor folks, or even recycle used ones. - Bicycle helmets for kids, and bicycle riding safety courses - Whistles kids can carry to call for help - Promote more Child Sanctuary homes around the beach - Gun safety for homes with kids - Poison treatment guides - Child nutrition? - Exercise and physical development? Thank you, Ms. Ingram and Dr. Bailet for a most interesting and informative presentation. Readers: February 16th Navy Child Development Center We don't have to do all of these things, and there may be better ideas from some of you. Please think about our new operating theme and see if you can contribute ideas of your own to advance the safety of the kids in our community. I am currently the chair of this committee, and I would appreciate any feedback you may have. Email or ring me with your contributions.
