  1. Spas: Refurbishment trends and reasons to add one to your property

  2. Spas have become an integral part of just about every new four- and five-star resort, as people expect pampering as part of a holiday purchase, or just a one-off spa indulgence. They are also being added to existing properties, such as private clubs and hotel apartments, in order for these properties to be competitive and grow in market share. • What are some key considerations when conceptualising a spa’s design?

  3. When refurbishing spas, what is out and what is in?

  4. What are some common themes/ styles of spas? What is current?

  5. What are the most common materials currently being used, and why? What are their benefits?

  6. Current popular wall and floor finishings

  7. More elements to take into consideration when refurbishing a spa

  8. Other trends

  9. Building, marketing and operating a spa is really not that different than building, marketing and operating a hotel or resort.

  10. Should you make the decision to refurbish your property and add a spa to the development, do not skimp – plan for every Rand that you invest in your spa.

  11. Spas have unique demands for water, lighting, equipment, sounds and smells so it is imperative to pay close attention to mechanical, electrical and plumbing requirements.

  12. The treatment menu will be based on the product selected for the spa. The treatment menu then determines the equipment required

  13. When considering building a spa or achieving a higher performance standard from an existing spa, the hotel owner needs to treat the spa as they would any other venue: there needs to be a focus on accountability and profitability

  14. A few statistics are worth considering when considering adding spa services to a hotel: The spa business is today the 4th largest leisure industry in the United States with over $11 billion in annual revenues There are an estimated 12,000 spas in the United States (inclusive of hotel and resort spas) which is up 25% from 2006 Women account for slightly more than 70% of the market, but spa utilization by men has been growing at a rapid rate over the past several years Currently, about 20% of all spa goers are 55 years of age and older, but the average age of the spa consumer is 40. Average income of this group is in excess of $70 000 per annum and over 50% have college degrees

  15. Spas are an important component of a hotel. Hotel owners should not underestimate their contribution to the guest experience and financial potential of their property. Spas are about giving personalized service, enhancing the vacation and meeting experience, and providing an enjoyable venue that helps people look and feel better.
