  2. The Project • ESSPER was born in 1995 on the initiative of Piero Cavaleri director of the "Mario Rostoni" Library of Carlo Cattaneo University of Castellanza and involved immediately, as members, the other Lombardy libraries specialized in economics and social subjects. Cinzia Fortuzzi

A Simple Idea • ESSPER is acronym of “Economia e scienze sociali: periodici” • The plan ESSPER is based on the participation of the single libraries: the librarians create, voluntarily and without any charge, the data-base with the analytical titles of the periodicals of their libraries.   4. Mission • The purpose is to provide instruments for information retrieval in the Italian language periodical literature for the economy and social sciences. Unlike the Angloamerican literature, we can find little news on it on the Internet. Cinzia Fortuzzi

Advantages • Cooperation has become an essential in the librarian’s job • There is a wide bibliographic coverage • The hard work, shared among the membership, becomes easier to do • ESSPER uses a suitable low cost technology • Money is saved, because there is no need of great investments in terms of time, human resources or sophisticated software • Libraries and librarians can provide answers to concrete requirements of their users • Possibility of creating a complex long-term project, by sharing our strength Cinzia Fortuzzi

Successes • Cumulative catalogue of periodicals possessed by participating libraries and a catalogue of analytical entries of periodicals created and maintained by the members, accessible free of charge on the net • The chance to draw up a standard bibliography on-demand • The possibility of enabling free document-delivery among the participating libraries Cinzia Fortuzzi

History • 2000 - the data-base ESSPER law (previously implemented from the CNR) became operative • 2001 - proposal for the creation of ESSPER working papers. • Writing of the Articles of association with the scope of protecting its electronic files (available for the free consultation on the net) from eventual exploitation trade • 2002 - ESSPER becomes an Association • There is an annual meeting, this year was at the Ministry of Economics and Finances Cinzia Fortuzzi

Library Cooperation • ESSPER constantly supports the cooperation between the participating libraries, and particularly interlibrary loan and document delivery. • It has created a rich network of relationships all around the national territory among many kinds of libraries (university libraries, documentation centers, etc.) Also one foreign library; the university Library of Lugano, situated in the Italian Canton Ticino of the Helvetic Confederation, is member of ESSPER. • ESSPER satisfies the majority of the demands for documents. Library Cooperation • The software shows the ESSPER libraries, which owns the periodicals • Every periodical is linked to the ACNP catalogue • The dates are transmitted for loading on to the ACNP periodically • ESSPER database is SFX compliant • ESSPER database can be searched via Metalib Cinzia Fortuzzi

ESSPER for Document Delivery and Interlibrary Loans • The article visualized in the data bank can be requested automatically from one ESSPER member library • a simple "click" allows you to load and to compile the application form without having to insert the data of the article that are found automatically • The ESSPER system mantains the historical records for all transactions perfomed while using it Cinzia Fortuzzi

Each User can… • search by author, by titles, and by key words • select by year • know the index of the available periodicals and volumes, with the possibility of visualizing the title of a volume or a single issue and to select the details of a title • know monthly and yearly statistics about ESSPER • register for the alerting service Cinzia Fortuzzi

  15. Management • The programs allow for inserting and managing the resources in remote access on the part of participating libraries. The most demanding and onerous task is the supervision and maintenance of the server that contains the archives (situaded in the LIUC). Cinzia Fortuzzi
