Child Maltreatment • Neglect outnumbers abuse 2 : 1 • Signs of neglect: failure to thrive • Signs of abuse: hypervigilance • Guest Speaker… assessing abuse • Reported vs. substantiated maltreatment
Mandatory Reporting • Certain people are required by law to report suspected child abuse • Therapist, audiologist, dental hygienist, social worker, physician, etc. • Department of Human Services • Ethical Dilemma
3 Levels of Prevention • Primary: broad, large-scale, benefit everyone • Secondary: narrow, small-scale, target high-risk areas • Tertiary: after the fact, prevent long-term consequences of problems rather than the problems themselves
Severe Psychopathology • Primary: Prevent prenatal complications • Free pre-natal health care (20% reduction) • Secondary: Decrease stress for populations at-risk • More non-skilled labor available • Wage subsidies • Tertiary: • Free psychological care
