Aims of ISME • To promote research and surveys and collaboration among scientists and organizations for the conservation, rational management, and sustainable utilization of mangroves • To promote and conduct training programs • To implement JICA Mangrove Training Course entitled “Sustainable Management of Mangrove Ecosystems” since 1995, 79 participants from 35 countries as of August 2006. • To implement JICA Training Course entitled “Environmental Education for Sustainable Development -Conservation of Coastal Ecosystems for Lives of Local Communities” since 2005, 11 participants every year. • Continuation of spontaneous short-term training courses and Exchange of consultants and transfer of expertise Mangrove, Iriomote Isl.
Malaysia Ghana Brazil Fiji Aims of ISME (continued) • To serve and collect necessary information for conserving and restoring mangrove ecosystem, and provide necessary information through Global Mangrove Database and Information System (GLOMIS) : http://www.glomis.com. ISME has 4 GLOMIS regional centers to collect data. • The project was funded by ITTO • Project was implemented by ISME from 1997 to 2006
GLOMIS CD-ROM III Stand alone CD-ROM: you can retrieve mangrove database without connection to GLOMIS database for users who don’t have high speed networks.

Recent activities Mangrove Nurseries and Experimental Plantation in the U.A.E. • Duration: 1999 - 2002 1 year old Photos provided by JODCO More than 4.5 % of salt concentration, and no rain and no fresh water supply at all
ISME’s recent and activities • Projects • Support for community based mangrove management and environmental education in Samoa • September 2004 – March 2006 • Mangrove ecosystem research and building of a boardwalk for public enhancement and ecotourism • Duration: 1 year • We could not continue it, because of bankrupt in Palau Boardwalk construction, Samoa Palau
Recent activities Project entitled “Action Plan on Sustainable Mangrove Management” funded by ITTO 2002 - 2004 • Duration: 18 months • To draw Mangrove Action Plan for immediate actions to follow ITTO Mangrove Workplan 2002 - 2006
Publications of ISME • “World Mangrove Atlas” published in 1997, funded by ITTO and worked together with UNEP-WCMC • “Journey amongst Mangroves” funded by ITTO • “Restoration of Mangrove Ecosystems” funded by ITTO • Newsletters “Mangroves” • Videotapes: “What tides bring,” “Living with mangroves” • Colored slides set for mangrove related education in schools

Palau (Cited from World Mangrove Atlas) On-going activities Revised World Atlas of Mangrove for Conservation and Restoration of Mangrove Ecosystems (PD 276/04 Rev. 2(F)) • Funded by International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) • Implemented by ISME with 4 partner organizations: • Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) • UNESCO- MAB (Man and Biosphere Programme) • UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) • United Nations University (UNU)
ISME’s on-going activities • Project • Restoration of degraded mangrove ecosystem in northern Brazilian coastal area • Funded by JICA as NGO’s grass-root activity supports • Duration: 35 months, June 2005 – March 2008 • Project area: coastal area of Bragança, Pará State • In collaboration withFederal University of Para (UFPA)- Bragança Campus, Museu Emilio Goeldi and Mangrove Dynamics and Management (MADAM)
ISME’s on-going activities Mangrove plantation and educational materials development in Kiribati • Funded by Cosmo Oil Co. Ltd. • Work together with Ministry of Environment and Ministry Education of Kiribati • Duration: 3 years since 2005 Kiribati Mangrove plantation by pupils of elementary school, and youth
ISME’s on-going activities Raising nurseries to plant trees for not only mangrove plantations, but also coastal forest establishments in Maldives Four years old mangroves
ISME’s on-going activities (continued) Survey for possibility of mangrove plantation in Tuvalu
Survey in BandaAcheh after the tsunami More than 800 mangrove trees were measured
We are calculating relationship between damaged mangroves and estimated water flow pressure of the tsunami
Damages to coral reefs caused by human activities Photos by Tamai • Sedimentation by runoff from crop fields, road construction, etc. • Eutrophication caused by runoff containing fertilizers from crop fields, etc. and effluents from hotels/households
My colleagues study relationships between artificial coral community restoration and some environmental factors • Abundance of herbivores such as parrot fishes, rabbit fishes, etc. • Eutrophication – growth of algae (Photos by Tamai)
Global Warming Coastal Erosion and Sea-Level Rise Coastal erosions are caused everywhere, especially coastal lines of small islands coastal erosion Maldives Kiribati
From my lab., Iriomote Isl. Sea-Level Rise (Okinawa islands as an example) Everyone says Okinawa has beautiful islands. However, With a 30 cm sea-level rise ↓ 95 % of sand beaches will submerge under the sea With a 65 cm of the sea-level rise ↓ 100 % of sand beaches will submerge under the sea IPCC reported that 88 cm sea-level would rise at the end of 21st century. We have to pay more attention to the sea-level rise in small island states/countries.

Palau Kiribati I am very happy to work together with scientists and also play with kids in mangrove forests
Kiribati Since coastal ecosystems are integrated, we have to collaborate each other to conserve and restore coastal ecosystems.
