  2. INTRODUCTION • A few decades ago, barcodes and barcode scanners may not be the first thing retailers would think of when setting up a business. They were more like a thing of future technology. Fast forward to the present day, barcode scanners are a common sight in retail stores. • Barcode scanners lay the foundation for efficient inventory control and management, resource utilisation, faster processing and a variety of other benefits that streamline operations and contribute to seamless customer experience and a healthy bottom line. However, even the best barcode scanner in the market will not offer the results and benefits you expect if they do not have the features and capabilities that your business needs. • Of course, all barcode scanners can perform the basic function – which is to read barcodes, but you need to look beyond that and see how they make the whole process more convenient and efficient. Some scanners are designed for specific work environments, such as extremely high temperatures or tough conditions. Others are built to perform well in low volume applications. There is a huge variety out there and that is why it is important to determine the types of barcode scanners and your needs before you make a decision.

  4. LASER • This is the most common type of scanner engine that uses a red laser to read the reflection of the black and white spaces in a barcode. Laser scanners are the most cost-effective option and are able to read standard linear (1D) barcodes.

  5. LINEAR • Similar to laser scanners, linear scanners only read 1D barcodes. The difference is that they take a picture of the barcode and then interpret it instead of reading the reflected light from the laser. A linear scanner is capable of reading poorly printed or damaged codes.

  6. 2D IMAGERS • As the name suggests, 2D imagers can read in two-dimensional manner and can read any type of barcodes. With 2D scanners, you can scan barcodes in any orientation and also take pictures like the linear models.

  7. What is the scanning distance in your application? • In some applications, you can scan efficiently while being a few feet away from the barcode while others may require holding a scanner within a few inches of a barcode. • That said, it is important to carefully evaluate the scanning distance requirements before making a purchase. • It’s not worth paying extra dollars for a model that can read from 20 feet away, if you can be within one feet of the barcode.
