  3. The simple act of planting a tree Planting – Dig a hole! Depth – Keep “root collar” at ground line Width – 2-3 times wider than the root ball Keep “root collar” at the ground line or slightly above

  4. The simple act of planting a tree • Planting – Water! • Settle the tree in and remove air pockets • 1” caliper uses ~3 gallons/day • 2” caliper uses ~6 gallons/day • Water only every 7 to 10 days

  5. Staking problems • Too high – No more than ~1/4 to 1/3 of total height • Too tight – cradle the trunk, don’t circle it • Use some kind of strap, not wire • Too long – no more than two years

  6. Goals of mulching • Decrease weed competition • Increase available water • Reduce potential mower damage • Make it look pretty! Mulch volcano
