VoIP Plans: H.323, SIP and ENUM Penn State University Information and Technology Services Phil Coolick PhilC@psu.edu
Current focus • Moving forward with H.323 telephony, replacing 15,000 legacy telephones. • Developing additional system features and functions.
Currently • We expect to have nearly 1,000 phones installed by the end of this fiscal year. • Looking towards expanding our VoIP deployment to other campus locations.
Future plans • Improving security and redundancy in the current system and in future VoIP technologies. • Develop trunking alternatives to the PSTN circuit model, if that is possible.
Futures • Continue to research and test scalable VoIP technologies for future deployment. • Monitor vendor and peer institutions deployment strategies for new ideas.
The long view • Employ SIP as a transition plan from H.323 • Test, then deploy, a model of SIP and ENUM across the network. • Illustrate the concept of scalable IP voice transport to vendors and carriers.
