In this mental math activity, students will play the SKUNK game to practice decision making and investigate winning strategies. They will gain a basic understanding of experimental probability and apply it to make and test conjectures. The language objective is for students to use listening, speaking, and writing skills to describe the strategies used in the game.

I will show I know it when: I can understand the probability of rolling the dice and the fair chances by participating in the game of SKUNK. 6.MP.1
Language Objective • By the end of the lesson, students will be able to use the language domains of listening, speaking and writing. • They will listen to and verbally communicate with their classmates describing the strategies they used to gain a basic understanding of experimental probability. • Academic Math Language Vocabulary: addition, probability, strategy.
You will start the game standing up. • I will roll two number cubes. • You will have a choice before each roll whether to remain standing or whether to sit down. • If you are standing when a roll is made that does not contain a “1” in it, you record those points on your score sheet under the correct column for each round. • If you decide to sit down at any time during the round, simply total up your points from that round and wait for the round to be completed. • If you are standing when a “1” is rolled, you lose ALL of your points for that round. • If you are standing when double 1’s are rolled, you lose ALL of your points from ALL ROUNDS THAT HAVE BEEN PLAYED TO THAT POINT. • Once you sit, you cannot get up again until the next round. • Each round ends when a “1” is rolled or when all students sit down. • The object of the game is to get the highest score possible through the five rounds of SKUNK.
