AP European History DBQ Ms. Pugh and Mr. Yuscavage
What is the DBQ? • The DBQ is an essay prompt that is to be answered by reading and analyzing a set of documents. • The DBQ tests your ability to use historiography skills (looking at historical evidence like an historian – not an average person).
How does an historian look at historical evidence? • Looks at WHO wrote something and tries to determine the reliability of the facts and determine any bias. • Looks at evidence through an historical context. • Historians look for all sides of the story and they recognize when only one side of the story has been told.
The DBQ Rubric • You can earn 6 points for the core rubric. The parts of the Core Rubric are: • Thesis statement that addresses all parts of the question. • Discusses a majority of the documents INDIVIDUALLY. • Understands the basic meaning of the documents. • Supports the thesis with appropriate interpretation of the documents to answer the question. • ANALYZES POV. • Groups the documents in at least three ways.
Expanded Core • If you earn all six points in the Basic Core you MIGHT earn additional points by doing the following: • Has a clear, analytical, and comprehensive thesis. • Uses all or almost all of the documents. • Addresses all parts of the question thoroughly. • Uses documents persuasively as evidence. • Shows understanding of nuances in the documents. • Analyzes point of view or bias consistently. • Analyzes the documents in additional ways – additional groupings or other. • Brings in relevant “outside” historical content
