Chapter 2 Vocabulary • Weather-the condition of Earths atmosphere at any particular place & time • Heat-energy transferred from an object at a higher temperature to an object at a lower temperature • Conduction-transfer of heat between objects that are in contact • Radiation-method of heat transfer allowing sun to warm the earth in the form of electromagnetic waves
Chapter 2 Vocabulary • Convection-transfer of heat within fluid from warm areas to cooler areas • Convection Cell-region of a fluid in which a convection current is maintained, can be global in size • Evaporation-change of liquid into a gas caused by heat • Global Winds-massive convection cells moving in the atmosphere, move in all directions • CoriolisEffect-Earths rotation deflecting global winds
Chapter 2 Vocabulary • Thunderstorms-large sections of warm moist air rising into cool dry air, create violent thunder lightning & occur in three stages Cumulus, Mature & Dissipating • Cumulus Stage-large bubble of upward moving moist air, temperature of bubble is higher than surrounding air, light rain no lightning • Mature Stage-rain signals the mature stage, rain pulls air down, at the same time air still rises. Temperature of upward air warmer than the outside cloud, strong rain, hail, thunder & lightning
Chapter 2 Vocabulary • Dissipating Stage-all air movement downward, losses its energy of the warm moist air new storms can start as thunderstorms dissipate • Lightning-visible electrical emission from a charged cloud • Tornadoes-form during the mature stage of a thunderstorm, winds move rapidly around areas of low pressure in a twisting motion • Air Mass-large quantity of air that has similar characteristics throughout it
Chapter 2 Vocabulary • Tropical Depression-tropical air mass of low atmospheric pressure just above or below the equator can be the signal for a hurricane • Hurricanes-form over warm tropical oceans and are violent storms with very strong winds and rain • Prevailing Winds-global winds that match the path of a hurricane • Blocking Highs-air mass that can stall or change the movement of a tropical storm and can keep a hurricane from advancing
Chapter 2 Vocabulary • Equator-imaginary line around the center of the Earth • Dense-something that is very thick and crowded together • Inertia-tendency of an object at rest to stay at rest and an object in motion to continue moving at the same speed and direction • Funnel Clouds-basically the same as a tornado but do not extend to the ground
