Project Overview • Produce tour-based commercial vehicle model • Based on 2001-04 Calgary/Edmonton models • Interim model from California Statewide system • Survey of individual business establishments in San Diego County • Two pilot surveys • Surveys Dec 2012 - May 2013 • Model complete early 2014
Learning from 2001 AB Surveys • Expanded from “commercial vehicle” to “work-related travel” • Changed employment focus from land use to SOC • Simplified by removing establishment and depot-specific forms • Simplified by removing questions on shipment commodity & value
Sample Frame • Establishment is basic sample unit • 600 estab. with travel (2500 tours) • Segments: • Geography (4 or 5) × Industry (7) • Establishment size (3 levels) × Industry (7) • Special targets • Most active shippers • Fleet allocators (e.g. postal, newspaper, garbage, utilities) • East San Diego County
Industry Group Overview Overall sample rate ~1 in 180 (0.55%)
Example Detailed Targets • Retail by geography: • 20 in North County (0.43%) • 20 in North City (0.45%) • 20 in Central (0.64%) • 20 in South/east (0.49%) • Retail by establishment size: • 50 in est. of 1-29 employees (0.33%) • 20 in est. of 30-159 employees (2.35%) • 5 in est. of 160+ employees (4.07%)
Survey Forms • Establishment information (# employees, # vehicles) recorded during recruitment call • Forms given to workers at establishment for survey day • Survey covers 24 hours of work related travel
Survey Forms • First pilot: one page per trip • Like household travel surveys • Survey packets unwieldy (11+ pages) • Intimidating; reduced response • Second pilot: travel log approach • 11x17 page folded to make 4 letter pages • Additional supplement for extra travel • Production survey: ver. 7.3B
