This summary outlines the egress requirements and options for a cryostat installation pit, including compliance with code standards and variance considerations. The document details the provision of stairs, mucking drift layout, Alimak lift option, and safety measures for egress drills and emergency situations.
E N D
SUMMARY • 50-80 people will be in the pit during installation of the cryostat • Extended period of construction after the campus has a certificate of occupancy • Key egress requirements:
OPTION 1: Code Compliant Egress System TRAVEL DIST. < 250’ • 3 egress stairs for code-compliance (exit separation/travel distance/common path travel)
OPTION 2: 2 Stair Layout (Variance) TRAVEL DIST. > 250’ COMMON PATH > 100’ • 2 stairs being provided for egress • Variance required • Travel distance and common path of travel not code compliant
OPTION 3: Stair and Mucking Drift Layout (Variance) COMMON PATH > 100’ TRAVEL DIST. > 250’ • One stair and mucking drift being provided for egress • Variance required • Travel distance and common path of travel not code compliant • Mucking drift is not a code compliant means of egress • Mucking drift should meet the following items for justification: • Able-bodied staff be at the bottom of the cavern (slope ~ 20ﹾ) • Flashlights provided at egress door to mucking drift • No public at the bottom of the Cavern • Egress drills will be conducted • No combustible materials in the ramp (no suppression system)
OPTION 4: Stair and Alimak Lift (Variance / No Alimak Provided) COMMON PATH > 100’ TRAVEL DIST. > 250’ • One stair and Alimak lift being provided for egress • Variance required • Travel distance and common path of travel not code compliant • Alimak lift is not a code compliant means of egress • Alimak lift will require the following for justification: • Standby power will be provided for the Alimak lift • The Alimak lift will be operational when exposed to water in case of a sprinkler discharge
