  1. Introduction We are talking about our visit to the beach of L’Aber and our meeting with Didier CADIOU about the information of the protection of the seashore and also about le four à chaux .

  2. Four à chaux (Lime kiln) The lime kiln was built in 1839 with fortifications dating back to the Ironage. The fortifications were made from the surroundings - earth and stone, creating a natural barrier. The Kiln was built to produce bricks for houses and walls, which was important because bricks were becoming scarce in the area. The Lime kiln became a monument in 1988.

  3. Three ways to protect the environment • 1. The property: buy territory • 2. Make new rules and laws for companies and the communities • 3. Make contracts with the farmers:they know exactly what they are allowed to do and produce on their farms

  4. Examples of their work to save the natural reserve • demolishing the camping park (forbidden to camp there since 1986) • The land was registered as a natural park • Houses are allowed to be built 100 m away from the sea

  5. The history of the activities • The history began in 1950 when they built the first dam to « break the sea ». • Then, in 1958 they built a second dam. It was a mistake because it took away to much biodiversity and sea water. • In 1977, they destroyed the first dam to let pass the water for the reproduction of the fish.

  6. A special mission • It’s the first time that they destroyed a dam to let pass tha sea water. We are the first to have destroyed a dam in EUROPE. Later, dams in Germany and Great Britain were opened, too.

  7. Effects of the project • 25 species of fishes have come back • There is more sand, even in areas of pure water • This leads to more insects and flowers, even bats have come back • This water is used for the villages in the area

  8. The work of Mr. CADIOU His work consists in organizing a lot of activities like cleaning the beach, for example they have gathered 7 tons of rubbish since the beginning of the year. He also opens some hiking trails for people who visit the site. There are 150 km of hiking trails in CROZON. He works with 4 other people in the Conservatoire Du Littoral.
