II. The Wilmot Proviso A. No slavery allowed in territories gained from war with Mexico.
III. The Compromise of 1850 A. CA becomes a FREE state B. Slave trade abolished in Wash. D.C. C. Stronger law to help slaveholders recapture runaway slaves.
IV. The Fugitive Slave Act A. Those accused of being fugitives (runaways) held w/o arrest warrant. No right to jury trial. B. Federal judge ruled each case…got $5 for releasing a runaway, and $10 for turning them over to a slave holder C. Fines for people who helped runaways D. Northerners couldn’t ignore it anymore… i.
