The Secure Media NetworkA Distributed Dance Scholarship Resource Gilad Rosner Systems Integrator
Overview • The SMN is designed for dance researchers and scholars • The goal is to increase access to audiovisual items housed in disparate collections • Dance footage must be high-quality to be of value • Rights for dance materials are varied and complicated
Security Logins DRM Sharing Internet-based No special computers Dance-specific search fields Route and source file diversity Constituent Diversity Low startup and maintenance costs Configurable bandwidth usage Ease of Use Low amount of training Simple interface Value for Dance Scholarship & Education High-quality video Follows established Finding Aid practices User Requirements
SMN Design • P2P-based Network • Embedded Metadata • Open Source software • DRM incorporated into the network • Certification of participants by all other participants
5 Steps • Encoding • Submission • Search • Retrieval • Playback
Certification • DRM-wrapped files communicate with the submitting institution • Institutions must allow each other participant to unlock the essences • If an institution feels that another participant is not respecting the rights of its submitted items, it can de-certify them
Possible Development Path: Lionshare • Developed at Penn State University with academic sharing in mind • Incorporates many of the feature requirements of the SMN • Missing DRM and Certification components • Open Source – favorable licensing options
