  1. The Great Gatsby- Final Discussion Questions • 1. American Dream • What is Gatsby’s dream? What is Nick’s dream? What is Fitzgerald saying about the American Dream in the 1920s? Do you think if he was alive today, he’d agree or disagree with David Kamp’s opinion in “Rethinking the American Dream”? How is the American Dream tied to the theme of the Frontier? • 2. Symbolism • How do authors say things without actually saying them? What do seasons represent in this book? What do the colors green, white, yellow, and pink represent? What do the East and West symbolize? What do the eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg symbolize? • 3. Point of View • How does point of view affect the way a story is told? What is Tom’s version of events? What is Daisy’s? What is Jordan’s? Why is Nick considered an unreliable narrator? Is he more likeable or unlikeable? • 4. Greatness • Why is Gatsby considered a great book? What is impressive about Fitzgerald’s writing? Also, Gatsby’s father says, “If he'd of lived, he'd of been a great man. A man like James J. Hill. He'd of helped build up the country.” Who is James J. Hill, why does Gatsby’s father say this, and do you agree? Is it a compliment? • Discuss these questions in your small groups. One person from each group will record the answers on a piece of loose-leaf. Another person will present them to the class.
