Supply chain innovation- necessary or nice? Application of QR codes technology for enhancing supply chain visibility- Technological innovation as component of strategic management Michal Buchowiecki
Technology overview • Quick Response codes (QR) are two dimensional matrix codes developed in 90’s by Denso Waive • technology capable of encoding URL, text, phone number, map location, etc • storage capacity of 7KB or 4,000 alphanumeric symbols (limitation of print size of the image) • (neodynamics.com, 2011) • capable of scanning from print, screen or projection • Technology commonly adopted in U.S, Japan, UK, and South Korea • patent, free to use technology • logistics and marketing applications • potential of support or replacement of • traditional 1D barcodes • best utilized if combined with social media • platforms (Birken, 2011) Michal Buchowiecki

QR coding as technological innovation in SCM • Modern business models require from firms and customers “ mutual co creation of value and mutual establishment of the process of value creation” (Prahald, Ramaswamy, 2004) • current lack of global integrated networks due to high implementation cost, existence of political constraints, and technical problems (Fatehi, 2009) • QR technology has the capability to increase performance of the firm (motorola.com, 2011) and B2B and B2C relationships if combined with social media marketing (Birken, 2011) • substitute to RFID • successful implementation of QR by Ford Motor Group in the form of Direct Parts Marking (DPM) for streamlining manufacturing processes (motorola.com, 2011) • QR used in health care industry for health education and mammogram scheduling (forbes.com, 2011) • At Kirin Brewery QR has provided cut in operating cost and reduced number of incorrect shipments Michal Buchowiecki

Implementation framework • Organizational level (exploring, learning • and mastering QR applications) • Supply side (building foundation for • demand side applications) • Demand side (preparing for application at • supply chain level by progressively • involving more tiers of SC) Michal Buchowiecki
