Principles of linked data • Use URIs to identify things. • Use HTTP URIs so that these things can be referred to and looked up by people and user agents. • Provide useful information when its URI is looked up, using standard formats such as RDF/XML. • Include links to other, related URIs in the exposed data to improve discovery of other related information on the Web. These technical principles are very brought. How to implement them depends on the use case. Ex Libris Ltd., 2011 - Internal and Confidential
A Research Example: Europeana • Europeana.eu is an internet portal that acts as an interface to millions of books, paintings, films, museum objects and archival records • Distributed digitized and born digital sources • Fully using linked data techniques for metadata A virtual European library, to make Europe's cultural heritage accessible for all Ex Libris Ltd., 2011 - Internal and Confidential
Problems • Central Discovery Platform • MetaSearch vs. Central Index • Central Index • Huge number of tripples performance • Harvesting from various sources • Variety of source formats (mostly none-RDF) • Versioning of tripples vs. flat source records • Governance of tripples vs. flat source records Ex Libris Ltd., 2011 - Internal and Confidential
New DM2E Project Digitised Manuscripts to Europeana • Started September 2011 • Major part is new digitzation techniques ... Ex Libris contribution to DM2E • RDFizer • MARCXML RDF • UNIMARC-XML RDF • RDF2EDM • Both are based on existing mapping rules • Other partners develop editiors for mapping rules • Both tools will be published in El Commons Ex Libris Ltd., 2011 - Internal and Confidential
Ex Libris and Linked Data • Questions to ask • Technology / License of data / Business Policy • Why should we do it? • Interoperability, especially with other domains • reshape shared metadata management • What should we do? • Publishing • Utilization of linked data sources • Modeling of future services Ex Libris Ltd., 2011 - Internal and Confidential
Alma and Linked Data • Apply RDFizer while publishing • E.g. publish to LinkedData.org • Keep global authority data incl. URI to source • E.g. LCSH / VIAF navigation • Enable URI lookup and reference to records in Community Catalog Ex Libris Ltd., 2011 - Internal and Confidential
Summary • Linked Data is in vivid research phase How to do it What to do with it • Ex Libris takes part in that research as a partner • e.g. DM2E-Project • Ex Libris prepares its products • e.g. Alma - URI access to Community Catalog Ex Libris Ltd., 2011 - Internal and Confidential
