  2. What Is TRiO-SSS

  3. The TRiO-SSSProgram is… … a federally funded program designed to help students find success in college. This program is currently funded to provide services to 186 students. These students benefit from academic support, progress monitoring, success workshops, and academic, transfer, and career advising. Our job is to help you excel in college!

  4. Who is Likely to Benefit

  5. Students who are… … not prepared for what is expected of them. Typical concerns include returning to school after being out for several years, poor preparation in writing and math, inadequate study skills, or anxiety and lack of confidence. The TRiO-SSS staff works with students on an individual basis enabling them to succeed.

  6. Who is Eligible

  7. Eligibility is determined by… … federal guidelines. If neither of your parents graduated from a four-year college, you are financially disadvantaged, or you have a documented physical or learning disability, it is likely that you qualify. In addition, you must be a U.S. citizen or Resident Alien, and have demonstrated an academic need for the program. TRiO-SSS will provide testing and documentation of academic need. Preference is given to students seeking a AA&S Transfer degree.

  8. Textbooks…

  9. Textbook Check Outs… … are available to all TRiO-SSS students. Please take care of these textbooks don’t use them as a coaster or a floor mat in your car. Remember to return them so we can “pass them on” to the next TRIO-SSS student!

  11. Laptop Check Outs… … are available to all TRiO-SSS students. Borrow a laptop for a few days to finish up a class paper or a project. Please take care of these laptops. And remember to return them so we can “pass them on” to the next TRIO-SSS student!

  13. Tutoring Services… … are available to all TRiO-SSS students. If you need help come see us, fill out the tutor request form and we’ll get you hooked-up with a tutor! If you’ve excelled in a class and really enjoy the material, come fill out the tutor recommendation paperwork and we’ll get you tutoring!

TRiO-SSSTutoring Lab… … is obviously a place for you to meet with your tutor, but it’s also much more than that… • The Tutoring Lab is a great place to start or finish your day. • A place where you can get that extra study time in with another TRiO • partner before a quiz or test. • A place where you can form a study group. • A place where you can use a computer to write your paper or • complete your assignment. • A place where you can look up career and scholarship information… • ask and we’ll show you where to look. • A place where you can find all the important information about TRiO • and campus events. • A place where you can just take a break … the coffee is always on!

  19. Viking Seminar Workshops… … are designed to bring information and knowledge to students in a fun, energetic, hands-on, comfortable environment. The only rule we have for the workshops is … There’s no such thing as a dumb question! Topics include:  how to file your FAFSA · how to find and apply for scholarships · career information · transfer information · understanding your learning style · stress management · study skills · where to find employment both on and off campus · how to develop a resume · and financial literacy information.

Cultural Activities… … are designed to help expand the horizons of students most of whom have not had the opportunity to see repertory companies perform, experience the food and customs of other cultures, or attend a full-length dance performance. These activities help promote personal and educational development. • The cultural activities our students attend include: • Columbia Basin Allied Arts • Seattle Music Museum • Seattle Mariners Game • Spokane Chiefs Hockey Game

Come Join the SSSClub… … and help create a network to enhance the social, cultural, and educational experiences for all students who participate in, are eligible for, or are interested in the Student Support Services Program.  We provide opportunities for students to gain leadership experience, raise scholarship funds, and perform community service.

  30. National TRiO Day… The Celebration and Awards The Cake Visit to the Senior Citizen Center BBCC Mariachi Band

  31. National TRiO Day… … is a day to celebrate and honor the TRiO-SSS student’s academic achievements. Our theme was … Giving Back to the Community! Our students began the day with a visit to our local Senior Citizen Center where they delivered an invitation for TRiO Day to all the residents. The students then returned to campus for a celebration that included cake and refreshments, awards and speeches, and a live performance from BBCC’s Mariachi Band.

JerryWorkmanTRiO-SSS Director Jerry Workman, M.Ed, Director, holds a Masters Degree in School Counseling from Seattle Pacific University, Bachelor's Degree from Western Washington University, Vocational Directors Certification from Eastern Washington University, and a Special Education endorsement from Portland State University. Jerry has been a high school counselor for over thirty years and has done extensive research and program design at both the local and state level in the areas of school to work and career education. His areas of expertise include: program development and management, providing scholarship, financial aid, academic, career, and transfer advising, professional mentoring, and workshop design.   34. CherylBrischleTRiO-SSS Program Assistant Cheryl Brischle, AAS, Tutor Coordinator and Program Assistant, holds an Associate in Applied Science from BBCC in Office Information Technology. She has three years experience in financial aid where she specialized in student employment. CustodioValenciaTRiO-SSS Academic Advisor Custodio Valencia, M.Ed, Academic Advisor / Learning Strategist, holds a Masters Degree in School Counseling through Washington State University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Spanish & Counseling from Eastern Washington University.  Custodio is an alumnus of BBCC as well as a successful former participant of the TRIO - Student Support Services and College Bound programs. His areas of expertise include: coordinating tutorial services, and providing scholarship, financial aid, academic, career, and transfer advising and professional mentoring. TennilleKimballTRiO-SSS Academic Advisor Tennille Kimball, M.Ed, Academic Advisor / Retention Specialist, holds a Masters Degree in Counseling and a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education from Heritage University. Tennille is an alumnus of BBCC and she has worked with various departments and programs on BBCC’s campus including: Opportunity Grant, Adult Basic Education, Early Childhood & Family Education, ECEAP, Supplemental Instruction and Math Jam.  Her areas of expertise include: coordinating tutorial services, providing scholarship, financial aid, academic, career, and transfer advising and professional mentoring.   37. Howdo I Sign Up Call or drop into the TRiO-SSS office in the Administration Building, Room 1433. You will be given an application for the program. If you meet the eligibility guidelines, you will be signed up for an intake interview. During this session, a staff member will help you develop a plan for success at BBCC.
