  2. When did it all begin? • The Myth of Romulus and Remus, 753 B.C. • Both from Aeneas’ line and thought to be sons of Mars • Abandoned on Tiber River • Raised by a she wolf

  3. The Age of Kings753B.C.-509 B.C. • Series of 7 Kings changed Rome from small village into a large walled city-state • The last king, “Tarquin the Proud,” was the last king to rule. • He was cruel and terrorized the people, so they led a revolt. • Tarquin was sent into exile

  4. The Age of the Republic509 B.C.-27 B.C • Rome was ruled by 2 elected officials called consuls. • Consuls advised by a senate. • This was a great time of expansion • Punic Wars (Gain Northern Africa) • Eventually gained Spain and Greece • Julius Caesar, a great general takes over the government and becomes a dictator. • Rome is in civil war for 12 years.

  5. Division of Classes Patricians vs. Plebeians • Patricians were the wealthy • Plebeians were not • Both fought each other for power.

  7. Age of the Emperors27 B.C.-476 A.D. • Augustus Caesar is Rome’s first real emperor • Ruled 40 years in Age of Pax Romana (Roman Peace). • For 200 years after, Rome was at peace. The Emperor Augustus

  8. Age of the Emperors27 B.C.-476 A.D. • In 180 A.D. invasions weakened the Empire. • By 284 A.D. Diocletian divided the empire into the Western and Eastern Empires. • Constantine took control and ruled from the Eastern Capital of Constantinople in present day Turkey.

  10. Fall of the Empire • In 476 A.D., Germanic invaders destroyed Rome. • The Eastern half lasted another 1000 years, but eventually broke up.

Major Themes of Roman History:  • 1) Achieve domination over the Mediterranean world and Europe to the Rhine and Danube Rivers by AD 100 • 2) Created institutions and a legal system (code law) that allowed Rome to govern this empire effectively; • 3) Crisis of the Third Century almost brought about the collapse of Rome; • 4) Rome recovered and was converted to Christianity;

  14. Alphabet and Language ·Latin became a universal language and many of the words we use today are derived from Latin Roots.

  15. The Beginnings of a Republic • 12 Tables: laws • Governed by annually elected officers of state.

  16. Government and Law ·Ancient law was classified into public, private, property and criminal law during this time. ·Romans developed the first legal code and later the first legal system with jurors, courts, judges and lawyers ·Senatus Populusque Romanus the Senate and the Roman people

  18. Architecture and Engineering ·The Romans used ideas from the Greeks to built bridges, roads, building and aqueducts. ·Arches and columns were used because they were sturdier and built to last. The Roman style emphasized: grandeur, magnificence, size

  19. Calendar ·The Julian Calendar as we use today was developed by the Romans.

  20. Military Organization ·Romans developed the most extensive and greatest fighting forces in the world. ·They were able to conquer most of Europe because of their numbers.

  22. Literature ·Rome produced important playwrights and historians to record the History and stories of Rome. ·Many stories such as the Aeneid by Virgil are still studied today.
