  4. Geography • Rome was the ideal • location due to: • -Access to water transportation • -Fertile lands • -Somewhat sheltered location

  5. Early Romans • Latins—Hill dwellers, lived in wooden hut villages • Greeks—Colonized south Italy and Sicily, spread Greek culture, grew prosperous through trade • Etruscans—Northern Italians, metal workers, engineers

  6. A Republic is formed • Rome’s last king was removed from power in 509 B.C. • Patricians believed that they were entitled to rule, have power & privilege • Plebeians were not allowed to hold high powered government positions until the Tribal Assembly was formed
