Prostitution’s Status Information • Prostitution is illegal, yet police turn and blind eye • 75 % of all Thai men visit prostitutes or have “lesser wives” • 20 %ofThailand’s prostitutiontakes place with foreign men visiting Thailand
Prostitution’s Status Information (Con’d) • 87 % of all women & children in prostitution in Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai are HIV positive • > 2,000,000women & children in prostitution, of which 800,000 are children age < 15 and 20% of these children are boys
Prostitution’s Status Information (Con’d) • Many young girls are sold by their parents into prostitution • Some children are kidnapped/ deceived into prostitution • Young girls whose been rescued from brothels have been resold again • Children who are HIV positive have been left out in the forest to die
