  1. NSF Research Experience in Polymer ScienceDavid Schiraldi (Case Western Reserve University),DMR-0353119 The interdisciplinary field of polymer science offers young scholars the opportunity to blend chemistry, physics and engineering principles in hands-on projects. Nineteen undergraduate students are working this summer on research projects which range from the synthesis of new light emitting polymers, stimuli-responsive materials, aerogel-based composites, and supramolecular complexes, to the fabrication of cutting edge polymer optical lenses and fuel cell structures, as well as the computer modeling of how polymer systems self-assemble. Participating undergraduate students are working within eight individual faculty research groups at CWRU, with daily mentoring by PhD students and postdoctoral fellows. . Ten NSF-supported students from Fisk Univ., Morgan State Univ., McNeese State Univ., SUNY Fredonia, Rochester Case Polymer REU Class of 2005 Institute of Technology, Michigan Technological Univ., Carnegie-Mellon Univ., University of Wisconsin – Rock County, and Columbia Univ. are working along side nine CWRU students who are being supported by a range of internal/state/federal/corporate sources.

  2. NSF Research Experience in Polymer ScienceDavid Schiraldi (Case Western Reserve University),DMR-0353119 Education University of Akron is being expanded to include students conducting polymer research at other REU sites (a total of 60 participants). Students are housed in the same dormitory complex, with social activities ranging from team sports, picnics and dinners, and amusement park and spectator sport outings. Coordination with other CWRU undergraduate summer programs expanded the range of new interactions that the students gained. Five students from the 2004 program are returning to CWRU as PhD students this year. Sophomore Eric Giles, 2004 Symposium Outreach The primary focus of this REU program is on creating opportunities in research for students who otherwise would not have access to research and polymer programs, forming a cadre of individuals that is rich in traditionally underrepresented groups. In addition to conducting a significant research project, students are participating in seminar-style lectures on polymer science, lab safety, technical career decisions, and ethics. Last year’s highly successful undergraduateresearch symposium with the
