What is the Holy Scripture (Bible)? • It is the word of God written by men under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. It consists of two parts: Old Testament and New Testament. • 72 sacred books forms the canon of the Bible, composed by various writers in three different languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek) • The writers were inspired by God to write those things that were necessary for our salvation. God used their talents like a painter making a portrait.
Since God is considered the author of the Bible, it cannot contain any spiritual error, as well as treated with reverence. • Pope Damasus ordered St. Jerome to translate the Bible into the common language of the people (Latin Vulgate). • The Catholic books contain seven more books in Old Testament. This was due to a disagreement whether to use the original Greek or Hebrew. The Greek version has been accepted since the time of the Apostles. • These seven books are called the Apocrypha
