NJHS Character Traits • Character - Demonstrates the highest standards of honestyand reliability; shows courtesy, concern andrespect for others; observes instructions andrules, punctuality and loyalty both in and out ofthe classroom. • Citizenship - Student involvement in civic activities. Students demonstrate participation and responsibility through their involvement in activities such as scouting, community organizations or school activities. • Leadership - Students exercise influence on peers in upholdingschool ideals; contributes ideas that improve thecivic life of the school; exemplified positiveattitudes and inspires positive behavior in others;demonstrates academic initiative and responsibility. • Service - Service consists of a student’s selfless and consistentinvolvement and voluntary commitment of time andenergy to a program outside of the school day thatbenefits a community/non-profit organization.

Bylaws High Honors: • achieves a 3.0 or higher in ALL Content strands (Product) • achieves a 3.0 or higher on ALL Learner Quality strands (Process) Honors: • achieves a 3.0 in most subject area strands • has no more than five 2.5’s in all subject strands • has no grade equal to or less than a 2.0 in any subject area strand • achieves a 3.0 or higher on ALL Learner Quality Strands (Process) Other criteria include the following: • 20 Community Service hours

Bylaws Other Criteria: Students will become ineligible for National Junior Honor Society if they: • Accrue more than 12 unexcused absences ormore than 8 unexcused tardiesper year. • Accrue more than 2 Alternative Learning Center (ALC) assignments per year or are suspended during either their 7th or 8th grade year. • At the end of trimester three, 7th grade members must maintain the NJHS member criteria in order to be in good standing for the start of eighth grade. If this is not so, an appeal form may be completed. • Appeals may be made by any students who did not meet the standards in place for membership eligibility. • A member who has been dismissed may appeal the decision of the Faculty Council to the principal

  5. Community Service • Minimum of 20 hours • Awards for top 2 students with the most hours • Distribute logs - Due by March 15, 2013

Community Service opportunities • Western Coventry Elementary School Harvest Festival • Help with games at the festival • October 27th 4:00-8:00 • Contact Ms. Yeskewiczto volunteer (tyeskewicz@hotmail.com) • Coventry Public Library – only 2 students needed • Help with emptying book bins • Tuesdays 2:30-4:30 • See Ms. Paon to volunteer • Science Department • Help clean & organize science closets • Flexible times (afternoons) • See Ms. Paon to volunteer • Mrs. Bettez’s Classroom Library – only2 students needed • Help set up Mrs. Bettez’s classroom library on her iPad • Flexible times (mornings & afternoons) • See Ms. Paon to volunteer

  7. Peer Tutoring NJHS runs a peer tutoring program to support students throughout the school who may need extra help in one or more of their classes. Students who register as tutors in the program will be paired with a 6th, 7th or 8th grade student who needs extra help in one or more classes. Tutors will be expected to attend weekly tutoring sessions, held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, which will be supervised by an NJHS advisor. If you wish to participate in the NJHS Peer Tutoring program, please complete the registration form and return it to Mrs. Macropoulos in room 207 or Ms. Paon in room 129 as soon as possible.

  8. Executive Board • President and Team Representatives: • NJHS will have one elected president and a team representative for each 8th grade team. These 5 leaders will be considered the NJHS Executive Board. • Requirements: • Executive Board members will be expected to lead NJHS throughout the year. They will help plan NJHS fundraisers and school dances. They will also be a vital part of Honors Night and will be expected to present throughout the ceremony. • E-Board Elections: • Executive Board elections will be held next Tuesday October 9th, 2012 from 2:30-3:15. Students running for office will be asked to give a brief speech explaining why they are the best student for the job. NJHS members will then take a vote and the new E-Board members will be announced the next day during morning announcements.
