Direct Objects • Diagram each part of these English sentences: I want that skirt. I bought some shoes. • What is the subject, the verb, the direct object?
Direct Object Pronouns • Direct objects receive the action of the verb. • Direct objects respond to the questions whom? or what? • Direct object pronounstake the place of the direct object in a sentence. For example:
Direct Object Pronouns • Instead of saying, “I want that skirt,” you can say, “I want it.” • The word “it” takes the place of the word “skirt.”

Direct Object Pronouns • The pronouns: • lo – la- los- las • refer to people and things • The pronouns: • me- te – nos – os • Refer only to people
Placement of Direct Object Pronouns • Direct Object Pronouns in Spanish are placed either before a conjugated verb or attached to the end of an infinitive.
Before the Conjugated Verb: • ¿Cuándo compras elboleto? • Lo compro esta tarde.
If the sentence is negative place the no before the DOP. • ¿Necesitas el itinerario? • No, no lonecesito.
Before the Conjugated Verb • Isabel, ¿tienes mi tarjeta de embarque? • No, no la tengo.
Before the Conjugated Verb • ¿Reclamas esos equipajes? • No, no los reclamo.
Before the verb or after the infinitive: Before the verb: • ¿Quieres comprar esamaleta? • Sí, la quiero comprar. After the infinitive: • ¿Quieres comprar esa maleta? • Si, quiero comprarla.
Direct Object Pronouns • When the pronoun replaces both a masculine and a feminine dircect object noun, we use los. For example:
