THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT! The heat from the Sun is getting out from the Earth but some of it is staying stuck in the Earth’s atmosphere. The carbon blanket blocks some of the Sun’s heat from escaping Earth producing Global Warming. Even though some of the heat manages to escape there’s still enough heat to gradually melt the North & South Poles & rise the water level a millimetre at a time!
THE CARBON CYCLE! The Carbon Cycle is a complex series of processes through which all of the carbon atoms in existence rotate. The same carbon atoms in your body today have been used in countless other molecules since time began. The wood burned just a few decades ago could have produced carbon dioxide which through photosynthesis became part of a plant. When you eat that plant, the same carbon from the wood which was burnt can become part of you. The carbon cycle is the great natural recycler of carbon atoms. Unfortunately, the extent of its importance is rarely stressed enough. Without the proper functioning of the carbon cycle, every aspect of life could be changed dramatically.
The Carbon Cycle’s link to Climate change The overwhelming majority of scientists agree that our globe is undergoing major climate change. They also agree that the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is rising significantly.
Why the use of wood helps the environment Recycling wood/paper/cardboard reduces the demand for fresh-cut timber. Consequently, fewer trees have to be cut down and more forests can remain intact, providing habitats for plants and animals, a heat and carbon sink, and a portion of the oxygen we breathe.
