Goals of the EAP • Give students an early signal of college readiness • Identify students before their senior year who need to do additional work in English and/or mathematics before entering the CSU • Collaborate with the high school community • Inform students, families, and high schools of students’ readiness for college-level work and partner with high school teachers and administrators to develop solutions • Provide 12th grade interventions • Motivate students to take needed steps in 12th grade to ensure readiness
Components of EAP The components of the CSU Early Assessment Program provide a comprehensive solution for helping students become ready for college. • 11th grade testing • Supplemental high school preparation • Teacher/administrator professional development • Parent/family communication • Preservice teacher preparation
11th Grade Testing To receive EAP results students must complete ALL sections of test • CST in English and/or mathematics (Algebra 2 or Summative High School Mathematics as appropriate) • EAP 15 multiple-choice items in English and/or mathematics • Administered with the CST • Untimed • EAP essay in English
11th Grade Testing • Determinations of readiness are based on the scoring of all sections • Portion of the CST (45-55 items) • EAP multiple-choice items (15 items) • EAP essay in English • EAP essay administration • March 2 - 31, 2010
Administering the EAP Essay • Best if essay is administered for all students on the same day at the school. • However, administering the EAP essay on multiple days is allowed. • Please discourage students from discussing the topics with other students.
Essay Test Security • All essay topics are to be returned to ETS with non-scorable test materials. • Topics and completed essays are not to be photocopied, photographed, or retained for any reason. • Students may not take the essay topic or completed essay outside of the testing room.
Test Determinations • Students are identified as • Ready for CSU college-level courses in English or mathematics • Not yet demonstrating readiness… • In mathematics, students may also be identified as ready on a conditional basis. • They must fulfill requirements in 12th grade in order to maintain exemption from placement testing. • Students whose results indicate readiness are exempted from placement exams • English Placement Test (EPT) • Entry Level Math Exam (ELM)
Releasing Test Results • Students should be encouraged to release their scores to the CSU • Students need to grid bubble on their answer sheet to release their scores. • Doing so allows them to retrieve their scores online and ensures that CSU admission offices receive their scores after they are admitted. • The EAP is voluntary and does not affect admission to the CSU.
EAP Test Results Available on the STAR Grade 11 Student Report • The results are on the backside of the report in the lower left-hand corner. • EAP results are not included on the CDE label with the rest of the student STAR results. • Separate EAP reports were not sent. • EAP results were sent to districts on CD Rom with STAR results. • Students can access their EAP results online (if the student filled the bubble on the score sheet) at www.csusuccess.org.

Duplicate Student Reports • Students may email requests for paper copies of reports to EAPDups@ets.org • Requests must include the following information • Full name • Date of birth • High school • Year student attended 11th grade Note: EAP results are only valid for the year following high school graduation.

English-language arts Supplemental High School Preparation • Expository Reading and Writing Course for students in grades 11 and/or 12 • Emphasizes in-depth study of expository, analytical, and argumentative writing • Approved to fulfill the “b” English requirement of the UC and CSU “a-g” college entrance requirements • Intended for broad usage (not as an honors or remedial course and not necessarily tied to EAP results) • Calibrated Peer Review online essay preparation • http://www.csuenglishsuccess.org/practice_ept_essays
Mathematics Supplemental High School Preparation • Supervised e-learning course in mathematics (ALEKS) for students who were identified as conditionally ready • Online test preparation in mathematics
Math and English Success Websites www.csuenglishsuccess.org www.csumathsuccess.org • Free, customized information and tools for students, teachers, and counselors • Checklists and guidance tips for parents (English and Spanish) • Personalized roadmaps with step by step advice and e-mail reminders • Student testimonial videos • Online learning tools
Personalized Roadmap • Students are encouraged to create a roadmap to receive personalized advice about how to best meet the ELM and EPT Requirements • The first step requires students to answer 1-5 questions • The questioning process determines what advice the student will be given • Over 30 personalized roadmaps can be generated depending on student responses
Personalized Roadmap • The roadmap informs students of the series of steps that they should take to become ready for the CSU • All information is provided via customized checklists that students can update in real time • The roadmap can be printed • All items are linked to other pages that provide further detail
Student Testimonial Videos Nicole Jason • Videos were shot of students enrolled in developmental math and English courses at Fresno State and Long Beach State • Videos have proven to be an effective motivational tool in convincing high school students to take the CSU placement requirements seriously
Online Tools – English and Math Test Prep • MATH • Online practice multiple choice tests (free) • ALEKS intelligent tutor online personalized math tutorial ($35) • ENGLISH • Online practice multiple choice tests with personalized feedback (free) • Calibrated Peer Review online essay writing tool (free)
11th Grade Portal www.csusuccess.org/juniors • Purpose • To motivate juniors of the importance of participating in the EAP • To encourage juniors to submit their e-mail address so we can alert them when their EAP scores are available online • Usage • Over 2,500 students have provided their e-mail address this year.
Online EAP Status Check www.calstate.edu/eap/results • Students can get their EAP math and English results online from this website • Available any time from anywhere • Provides advice for getting ready for CSU math and English.
California Community Colleges and the Early Assessment Program
Senate Bill 946 • Signed by Governor September 28, 2008 • Authorizes the System Office and community colleges to implement EAP and to access data • CCC’s to use existing EAP framework established by CSU & CDE • No new funds • Community colleges can volunteer to administer EAP • Authorizes community college districts to use EAP results for assessment and placement purposes
CCC Chancellor’s Office Role • Collaborate & coordinate EAP implementation with CDE and CSU Chancellor’s Office • Authorized to receive EAP data and provide data to participating community colleges • Coordinate community college EAP efforts • Provide technical assistance to community colleges • Establish reporting requirements • Submit report to Legislature & Governor on EAP implementation progress & results by February 15, 2015
Community College Participation In order to participate, colleges must submit application/plan to the System Office and: • Identify an EAP Coordinator to work with CSU and local K-12 districts • Serve students within district boundary • Use existing EAP infrastructure of academic opportunities (ERWC, etc.) • Use EAP results for placement • Meet Chancellor’s Office reporting requirements
