  21. Equality 2.2 • Belief in God = God creates equality • Running away from “Europeanism” • …but not for slaves… • TODAY • Slavery abolished in 1865 • More woman's rights 1920 19th amendment • …but still have glass ceiling, not truly all equal • IDEALISTIC Quality

  22. 2.3 Rights • Rights of ALL humankind, (except slaves) not really “Human” • Based on philosopher John Locke “natural rights” or innate • TODAY • Rights granted in the Constitution and Bill of Rights • (Speech, press, bear arms, religion etc…) • Economic rights??? • Social rights???

  23. 2.4 Liberty • Protection from the government interfering in ones life • “Liberty or slavery, that is the question…” • TODAY • Freedom to make choices • What we believe • How we live • “Should we limit our liberties at certain times in order for the greater good?”

  24. 2.5 Opportunity • Every man should own his own property • Great lure • “just a chance” • TODAY • Chance to reunite families, get an education, live in peace • …CHASE YOUR DREAMS • “Be all you can be!”

  25. 2.6 Democracy • Freed from a Monach or Dictatorship • Worked in a small scale…does big work? • White, adult, property owning men • TODAY • Minority groups fighting for equal say • NAACP • Your choice to vote…then why only 58.7%???
