  2. What is Risk Management? • A process involving identifying, analyzing, evaluating,and minimizing actual and potential risks. • Reduces exposure to liability by seeking to prevent harm to patients, staff, visitors, and medical center property.

  4. Legal Functions • Investigation of potential and actual claims and suits • Negotiation and settlement • Depositions, mediations and trials

  5. How long does someone have to make a claim or bring suit? NC Statutes • 2 years following a death • 3 years following an occurrence • 19 years following a birth related injury

  6. Occurrence Reporting • Use the green Risk Management Occurrence Report PE-140. • For reporting situations involving • patients, • visitors, • or property.

  8. Policy Location • Policy 13.2, Risk Management Reporting • Administrative Policy Manual • Call Risk Management immediately for serious occurrences

Serious occurrences warrant an immediate call to Risk Management • Falls with significant injury • Unanticipated death or serious adverse outcome not related to the patient’s illness or underlying condition • Patient injury caused by equipment malfunction • Suicide of patient • Surgery on the wrong patient or wrong site
