What is GIS? Geographical Information Systems (GIS) can be regarded as the high- tech equivalent of the map. An individual GIS map contains a lot of information which is used in different ways by different individuals and organisations. http://www.smrt.bristol.sch.uk/
Why use GIS in teaching Geography? • To aid enquiry learning and geographical skills • For interactive geographical investigations • For help with map reading and interpretation • To move from paper based to digital fieldwork • To introduce GIS vocabulary • Because it’s memorable and fun! http://www.smrt.bristol.sch.uk/
What do you need for GIS in teaching? • A digital map or photo – you can obtain ready drawn digital maps very easily or import/sketch your own. 2. A datafile – information about locations on the map – either ready made or from field work. 3. A GIS programme – to display and investigate the map and data. http://www.smrt.bristol.sch.uk/
