  10. About your classroom. • “Decide what to be and go be it.” – The Avett Brothers • “I know it’s heavy, I know it ain’t light. But how you gonna lift it with your arms folded tight?” – Arcade Fire • “What goes around, goes around, goes around, comes all the way back around.” – Justin Timberlake • “If it doesn’t make sense, it’s not true.” – Judge Judy • You get more bees with honey than salt. (American idiom) • “Don’t kill my vibe.” – Kendrick Lamar

  11. Classroom Procedures. • Be teachable. • Are you on task? • Are you ready? • Are you willing? • Are you proud of the work you’re doing? • Are you asking questions that matter? • Would your mother/father/grandmother/pastor/little brother be proud? • Meet me halfway • Help others when able • Show respect to get respect (appreciation, generosity…) • Clean up after yourself • Be smart, not a smart mouth

  12. Fire Drill Procedures • Stay together as a class. • Exit quietly and quickly. • Meet in the designated space. • Stay there until told to return to the room. • Attendance will be taken outside, if you are not where you’re supposed to be your participation grade will be penalized. • First person back to the room gets 3 BBPs, second person gets 2, third person gets 1.

  13. Layered Curriculum. • Student-driven • You set your own pace and hold yourself accountable for completion with self-checks • Personalized • You choose between a variety of activities only the ones that interest you or suit your skillset • Demonstrational • You use the language in real ways to produce more than completed work • Interpersonal • You work collaboratively and communicate with others to achieve your goals • Globally Minded • Explore the target cultures, use technology and 21st century skills to investigate and complete tasks centered around shrinking the world and creating a community of understanding

  14. Barry Bueno Card. • Earn extra credit every time you participate in a positive way. • You don’t have to get the right answer. • Keep track of your points every day on your card and have your card signed at the end of every class. • **Señora WILL NOT sign points from previous days. • After you earn 20 Barry Bueno points, turn in your full, signed card and bump ANY grade up 5 points!

  15. Late Work Policy. • Late = did not turn in when required due to negligence on the part of the student. • Late work will not receive full credit. • Make up work = did not turn in when required due to an absence from school ON the due date. • Don’t turn make up work into late work by failing to turn it in in a timely manner! • Make up work must be turned in within 5 days of your return to class. • YOU are responsible for your make up work. • Only work missed during EXCUSED absences will be considered for full credit. UNEXCUSED = partial credit

  16. Tips for success in your Spanish class. • Do not create or become a distraction. • Do not get out of your seat unnecessarily. • If you’re drawing attention to yourself in a negative way, don’t get belligerent when you’re addressed in a negative way. • Do not wait to be asked to work. • Do not expect to be asked to work. • Do not expect to be rewarded for working. • Use technology for academics. • Do not lounge around off-task, watch youtube videos, snap chat, text, or use google translate. • Do not act surprised or innocent when you’re caught lounging around, watching youtube videos, snap chatting, texting, or using google translate. • Do not try to negotiate with me. • Do as you’re instructed. Period. • Do not act surprised when you are reprimanded or removed for failing to do as you’re instructed. • Do not act like a victim when you’re reprimanded or removed for failing to do as you’re instructed. • Act your age. • Remember you’re a teenager, not an adult. • Remember you’re a teenager, not a little child. • Do not get belligerent when your teacher treats you like a teenager. • Do not act like a little child when your teacher treats you like an adult (and holds you accountable for your actions). • Know your place in this class and classroom. You’re a student. • Know my place in this class and classroom. I’m a teacher. • Know that being superior is shown more in the character of a man than his title.

  17. Think about it… • When did you learn English (or your first language)? • When I was 2. • Still learning it. • As a teenager. • How did you learn English? • Mindless repetition of terms. (BALL. BALL. BALL.) • By writing words 100 times in different colors. (Ball BallBall) • By modeling, gestures, and exposure. (Look at the ball! See the ball? Can you say “ball”?) • What did your language sound like the first year you spoke it? • I like ball. Ball is fun. Ball is pretty. Ball is red. • I like that ball best, red is my favorite color. • Playing with that red ball yesterday reminded me of a poem I once read and it struck me that time is so fleeting. • How do you think you will BEST learn Spanish?

  18. What does Señora B’s Spanish 1 class look like? • Coloring and crafts • Songs and chants • Interactive activities and games • Exposure, repetition, storytelling • Practice, trial and error, rehearsal, mastery!
