  1. Chapter 14 Periodic Table • Classification of Elements • Periodic Trends

  2. Classification of Elements • Dmitri Mendeleev (1871) first to organize the Periodic table well.

  3. Electron configurations are very important in organizing the Periodic Table • All elements in the same group have the same valence electron configuration

  4. Mendeleev Periodic Table 1871

  5. Electron Configuration of Groups • Noble Gases – outermost s and p orbitals filled • Akali Metals – outermost s has one electron • Alkaline Earth Metals - outermost s has two electron (filled) • Halogens – Outermost s filled, outer most p has 5 electrons

  6. Electron Configuration of Groups • Transition Metals – Outermost s filled, d ranges from one to ten electrons

  7. Electron Configuration of Groups • Describe each of the following in terms of valence electrons: • Group 13 • Group 14 • Group 15 • Group 16

  8. Periodic Trends

  9. Periodic Trends • Atomic Radius • Increases as you move down a group • Decreases as you move from left to right across a period

  10. Periodic Trends • Ionization Energy • Generally increases across a period • Generally decreases down a group

  11. Periodic Trends • Electronegativity • Decreases as you move down a group • Increases as you move from left to right across a period

  12. Periodic Trends • Ionic Size • Increases as you move down a group • Cations decrease as you move from left to right across a period • Anions increase as you move from left to right across a period
