Observations Continued • Types: • Quantitative – measureable or countable • 3 meters long • 4 marbles • 50 kilograms • 35 degrees Celsius • Qualitative – describable, not measureable • red flowers • smells like fresh baked cookies • Tastes bitter • The skill of describing scientific events
Inferences • Logical interpretation based upon prior knowledge and experience • Conclusions or deductions based upon observations of given evidence • Example: When you entered my room for the first time, you most likely inferred that the individual in the front of the roomwas the teacher.
Note the Differences • In laboratory exercises, record observations NOT inferences • Inferences may be used when writing the conclusion in your lab report.
