BRNO • Area: 230 km² • Population: 378 327 • Brno isthe second largest city of the Czech Republic. • It is the seat of the Constitutional Court, the Ombudsman, the Office for the Protection of Competition and the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority. • Brno Exhibition Centre ranks among the largest exhibition centres in Europe. • Sights : Špilberg Castle, the functionalist Villa Tugendhat, the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, Veveří Castle. OSTRAVA • Area: 214 km2 • Population: 296 224 people • Ostrava is the third largest city. • It is located close to the Polish border. • Its history and growth have been largely affected by exploitation of the black coal, giving the town a look of an industrial city. • Nowadays many of the heavy industry companies are being closed down or transformed. PILSEN • Area: 138 km2 • Population: 170 322 • It is located about 90 km west of Prague at the confluence of four rivers -the Radbuza, the Mže, the Úhlava and Úslava. • The city is known worldwide for Pilsner beer. • Plzeň was in 2010 selected by an official jury to be the European capital of culture in 2015. BUDWEIS • Area: 55.56 km2 • Population: 96 053 inhabitants • Location: in the center of a valley of the Vltava River, at the confluence with the Malše • It is the largest city in the South Bohemian Region as well as its political and commercial capital, the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese. • Sights: Black Tower, Virgin Mary Church, St Nicolas Cathedral Obr. 5.
