  1. Scientific Notation Ms. Mangat Science 10

  2. What is Scientific Notation? • Way to express very small or very large numbers • Used by scientists to avoid making mistakes when writing very large or small numbers. • Use exponents (10³)

  3. Scientific Notation Exponent: Symbol or number denoting the power to which another number or symbol is to be raised. It shows the number of repeated multiplications of the base. I.e.) 10² = 10 x 10 5³ = 5 x 5 x 5

  4. Scientific Notations Using exponents prevents us from making mistakes and requires less writing! I.e.) Mercury is 58 000 000 km from the sun If somebody added another zero by mistake, that would change the number by a large amount!

  5. Standard Form to Scientific Notation • Place the decimal so there will only be one digit to the left of it 2)Write “× 10” and count the number of places you’re moving the decimal. This value is the exponent.

  6. Standard Form to Scientific Notation If the original number is < 1, the exponent will be negative I.e.) 0.00433 = 4.33 x 10¯³ If the original number is >1, the exponent will be positive. I.e.) 5600000 = 5.6 x 106

  7. Scientific Notation to Standard Form If exponent is positive, move decimal place to the right that number of times. I.e.) 4.2 x 104 = 42000 If exponent is negative, move decimal place to the left that number of times. I.e.) 4.2 x 10¯4 = 0.00042

  8. Instant Practice Write the following in scientific notation • 6850000= • 0.000456= • 789456897= • 67590000000= • 0.000000098= Write the following in standard form” 1. 8.7x103= 2. 9x10-3= 3. 5.425x105= 4. 2.65x10-3= 5. 1.0001x106=
